Obituary for Mrs. Irene Marie Nakonechny (Mendyk)

IRENE NAKONECHNY

Dan and Lainie are sad to announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Irene Marie Nakonechny, peacefully on Saturday, February 18, 2023.

If you knew our Mom, she would have cooked, baked, sewn, or knitted for anyone, golfed with you, canvassed for your campaign or cause, given you her recipes as well as her opinions and advice (whether you asked for it or not).

Irene was born on December 1, 1932 in Fort William and was raised in Westfort. She married her love, Mervin and lived with him in their home on James Street, filled with family, friends, music and food for over 60 years. Irene worked at Lakeshippers, Rutledges and Chappels before becoming the receptionist at Philpot and Delgaty Insurance. She spent many years at the front desk with a sharp pencil and a smile for everyone.

When she retired, Irene had more time to tear up the course at the Fort William Country Club, travel and work on her sewing and craft projects. No visitor left the house without mittens, socks or some cookies.

When we lost our Dad in 2020, Irene's bright spark dimmed. Thanks to all of her family and friends who supported her through these past challenging years.

Irene is survived by her son, Dan and daughter, Lainie; grandson, Ryan and great-granddaughter, Victoria; sister, Dolly Dove (Mervin), brother, Bill Mendyk, sister in law, Anne Scerba as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

She was predeceased by her son, Brian and husband, Mervin; her parents, Annie and Alex Mendyk; uncles, Morris and Walter; aunts, Rose, Jeanette and Olga, and her sister-in-law, Carol Mendyk.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in the Spring, when we can look over the golf greens – Mom had a great short game. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Irene to the George Jeffrey Children's Foundation (www.georgejeffreyfoundation.com).

Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.
