Obituary for Mrs. Angiolina "Angelina" D'Uva (Giancola)

Angiolina D’Uva
August 27, 1930 - March 20, 2023

We, the family of Angiolina D’Uva, sadly announce the passing of our beautiful and loving mother, mother-in-law, sister, Noni, and Zia. Angiolina passed away peacefully at home comforted and loved by her family.

Angiolina was born in Castelpetroso/Isernia, Italy, to Domenico and Letizia Giancola. She grew up in this small, lovely village helping her parents and siblings with the day-to-day running of the home. Though she only completed elementary school, she was as wise about life and relationships - the things that truly matter - as any scholar.

Angiolina first noticed her future husband, Nicola, at a Sunday service at the tender age of 10. Upon Nicola’s return from WWII as a POW, he began to notice the beautiful 17-year-old Angiolina, and they later married in 1948.

In 1960, with their three children Tony, Julie, and Domenic, they immigrated to Canada - landing in Halifax, then on to Fort William - to start what they hoped would be a better life for themselves and their children. In 1961, they were blessed with their second daughter, Marie. Prior to moving to their family home on Centre Avenue, they were sponsored by, and lived with, Angiolina’s brother, Pasquale, and his family.

Angiolina was the glue of the D’Uva family. Always providing. Always keeping the family together and close by sharing meals around the table, traditional Italian meals that she prepared with endless love and care. Her whole life was in service to her family; this was her priority. When she could no longer prepare meals, she would take the family out for celebrations and special occasions just “to be together,” as she would say.

Angiolina was happiest being surrounded by her family, socializing with friends, and helping others. She embodied grace and kindness. While living at Sister Leila Greco she was recognized for being “a good neighbor ... caring and kind to all.”

Along with her family, Angiolina’s faith in God was foremost. She trusted God to provide for her family and friends. She found strength and comfort in prayer and the church. She never faltered from her faith even when visited upon by life’s greatest of sorrows, the passing of her eldest son at 19 years of age. During her final days on earth her prayers were whispered to God.

Angiolina left her mark on so many people. She will be immeasurably missed by her children Julie (Jim), Domenic (Rosi), and Marie (Keith), and her seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Becky (Jon), Sasha, Joshua, Hannah, Sophia, Nicholas, and great-grandson, Taylor . Left to mourn are also her brother, Pasquale; sister, Christina (Bernardino); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Angiolina was predeceased by her husband, Nicola; son, Tony; and sisters Antonietta and Sister Mary Peira.

Funeral Services for Angiolina will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023 with family and friends gathering in St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 10:30am, concelebrated by Father James Panikulam and Msgr. P.M. Stilla, V.G. A luncheon will follow at the Westfort Chapel. Entombment in Sunset Memorial Gardens for family will take place after the reception. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 5:30pm until 7:00pm in the Church, with Vigil Prayers offered at 6:15pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Hope Dog Rescue or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James.

The family would like to express their heart-felt thanks to the following professionals for helping Angiolina be at home during her final days: Drs. Miller and Migay; Home and Community Care Coordinator, Linda; and Paramed staff, Andrew (RN), Tyler (RN), and Angie (OT).
