Obituary for Mrs. Jane Mary Peters (Pannozzo)

JANE PETERS
(PANNOZZO)
May 10, 1936-April 29, 2023

Mrs. Jane Mary Peters (Pannozzo), age 86 years, passed away peacefully in Southbridge Pinewood Court on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

Jane was born in Lac Des Mille Lacs First Nation on May 10, 1936 to James Peters and Mary Ogimha, and was raised in Raith, Ontario. In 1959, she met Nicolo Pannozzo and they were married, living in Mokomon until Nick's passing in 1984. Jane then moved to Upsala, where she resided until moving to Thunder Bay due to health concerns.

Jane was happiest riding alongside Nick, going to the trap line, hunting and being in the bush. She worked various jobs throughout her life, but her favourite was taking care of her family. Jane devoted her time and knowledge of her traditional heritage to her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She loved her Bingos, and you could always find her in a Bingo Hall, whether it be early or late.

Jane (Kokum) was the carrier of the Traditional Kokumis Drum and was known as “Kokumis Jane”. She passed this onto her daughter Amelia (Crowley) Peters, whom she taught the traditional ways and values to at a very young age.

Jane is survived by her only daughter, Amelia (Crowley) Peters (Bill Keeley); nieces Eva Peters, Vanessa (Kevin) Chapman and nephews Kelly Peters, Clark (Chrystine) Chapman and Neil Chapman;
grandsons Troy (Jolene) Peters and Billy Peters; granddaughters Jolene (Kenneth) Gaudette, Michelle (Rob) Crowley, Tami Gaudette and Wendy Ligate as well as her numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Nicolo Pannozzo; her only sister Rose Nevala; her parents Mary and James Peters; nephew Adam Nevala and nieces Josephine Chapman and Mavis McKenzie; great-nephews Armond and Bryan McKenzie; uncles John, Alec and Jack Ogimha.

The family would love to thank the staff of Pinewood Court – Hummingbird Wing for all the kindness, love and care they gave to Kokum. ♥

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023 at the Upsala Community Centre, where a Traditional Ceremony will begin at 1:00pm, followed by a full traditional burial at Upsala Cemetery. Services will be officiated by Arron Thiereault and Ron Kanatski.

The Active Pallbearers will be: Jordan Gaudette, Gordon Gaudette, Thomas Peters, Timothy Peters, Nicolas Peters and Chance Peters. The Honourary Pallbearers will be: Troy Peters, Kenneth Gaudette, Bill Keeley, Clark Chapman and Neil Chapman.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, Thunder Bay.
